Fungus #1 by James Kochalka. Picked this up from Box Brown at MICE. Definitely one of the best Kochalka comics I've read, and left me wanting more. Kudos to Box on his new publishing venture, Retrofit. Link.

Louis CK at the Wilbur Theater. Topics included evolution, death, childhood, and why Framingham is the worst place on earth. Link

Drive by Nicolas Winding Refn. Best movie of 2011 (so far). Link.

Deadwood. I didn't watch this when it aired, and never bothered to revisit it because I heard the ending was really disappointing. That may or may not be the case (I have six episodes left), but I've loved every second to this point. Link.

A FEW THINGS

1. My comic "Control" is in the Harvard Bookstore Comic Anthology Minimum Paige. Paige is an in-store book machine on which the anthology was printed. It includes comics by a lot of Boston-area creators. You can purchase it and watch a video of the printing process HERE.

2. Thank you to everyone I met at MICE this past weekend. It was a fun event.

Dinosaur Jr Live at the Paradise. The reformed pride of Amherst playing Bug in its entirety, book-ended by a few additional crowd-pleasers (In a Jar, The Wagon, Out There, and The Lung). The on-stage interview by (a surprisingly-svelte) Henry Rollins was a welcome bonus, however hyperbolic his promise of earth-shattering dBs wound up being. Link.

Game of Thrones. With the notable exception of the video game Oblivion, I've never had much of an interest in fantasy as a genre in any medium. Nothing against it, per se, it's just never really appealed to me. That being said, this show is pretty awesome, and I would encourage people to drop whatever misgivings or aversions they may have to this sort of thing and check it out, because it's engaging and well-made and worth being nerdy about. Paying For It by Chester Brown. This is a comic memoir about Chester's experiences paying for sex. You can approach it as a thought-provoking treatise on moral preconceptions or as a skeevy, voyeuristic curiosity. I think it works on any level you choose to engage it on. Link.

Common Era by Belong. For fans of fuzzy, droning, reverb-drenched pop with unintelligible vocals. You know who you are. Link.

Ben & Lauren's Wedding. My amazing friends Ben and Lauren got married on Cape Cod this past weekend. They're totally great, wonderfully compatible people, and I couldn't be happier for them.

I bought this at the antique market a few months ago. It's a book of collages by a woman who died in the thirties. The book itself (into which the images are glued) is called Modern Mysteries and appears to be about spirits and communicating with the dead.

Public Strain by Women. Favorite record of 2010. I'm also fortunate I got to see them live before they imploded.

Dogtooth by Giorgos Lanthimos. Glad to see incestuous psycho-drama back in the hands of its progenitors. Sophocles would be proud. Link.

Crickets #3 by Sammy Harkham. Next level stuff.

Bob's Burgers. Huge fan of everyone involved in this show. Home Movies is one of the all time greats. The final product is maybe a bit less than the sum of its talent, but it's still funny and it'll only get better (assuming it's not replaced with a Quagmire spin-off or something). Link.

Year of Panic by Hanoi Janes. Spastic bedroom pop from Germany. Achtung!

Parks & Recreation. Better than The Office. Not even close anymore. Link.

A FEW NEWS UPDATES.

1. Sarah Morean wrote a really nice review of my books over at the Daily Crosshatch. It's HERE. Thanks to her for doing that.

2. I made a mini in December for the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival. It turned out well and sold out at the show, so I'm going to make a few more and sell them on the blog. They should be available soon.

3. A British zine I did the cover art for is included in a huge book called Fanzines. I wasn't asked or credited, but I'm in there. So there's that. You can read about the controversy HERE. I should say that the publisher sent me a copy immediately after I brought it up to them, and it's a nice looking book.

4. I did design for a split 7" by One Happy Island/Standard Fare. It's HERE.

Red Road by Andrea Arnold. 2006 debut feature by the British filmmaker responsible for past curio, 2009’s Fishtank (both films won the Jury Prize at Cannes). It’s one of the more complex and well-executed voyeuristic thrillers I’ve seen. Arnold’s right up there with Kelly Reichardt and Lynne Ramsay as one of today’s pre-eminent female directors. Link.

Marc Maron at Great Scott. I’ve been a fan of Maron since around 2006, but this is the first time he’s performed in Boston. He did not disappoint. I recommend his three comedy records and WTF podcast to anyone who is a fan of painful admissions, embarrassing personal details and debilitating neuroses. Link.

Childrens Hospital. Wonderfully cast, short-form satire of medical dramas written and created by Rob Corddry. The first season (originally a series of five minute web shorts) was just rebroadcast on Adult Swim in a reconstituted form. It has a unique sensibility and is consistently funny. New episodes are airing every Sunday, culminating in a LIVE episode sometime in October. Link.

Wally Gropius by Tim Hensley. I’ve been excited about this book since I saw the first excerpt in Mome. On the surface it appears to be a satire of Richie Rich (and employs a supremely well-observed Dell/Harvey/Archie aesthetic), but it’s so strange and dense and hilarious that it really winds up being something much larger than the sum of its references. Link.

Death Comes To Town by The Kids In The Hall. As an admittedly weird teenager, the Kids in the Hall were very important to me. I would watch reruns on Comedy Central almost every day, and I’ve probably seen Brain Candy fifty times. That being said, when I heard they were doing a new mini-series on the CBC, I was a little skeptical. With the exception of a few reunion tours, they haven’t produced any new material in almost fifteen years, and comedy doesn’t often age well. But barring some puffiness and a handful of questionable production decisions, I thoroughly enjoyed Death Comes to Town. It’s a completely worthy addition to the KITH canon. Link.

Mister Lonely by Harmony Korine. I resisted seeing this movie for a while because the cover features Michael Jackson and Marilyn Monroe together in a rowboat, and it just seemed like an image that was incompatible with a good movie. Failure of imagination on my part. It’s ridiculous to be sure, but also manages to be poignant, consistently interesting and visually stunning. It owes a large stylistic debt to Werner Herzog, which makes his appearance in the film all the more enjoyable. Link.

Flesh and Bone by Julia Gfrorer. Shock and awe debut comic recently published by the class acts at Sparkplug. Reads like a Hans Christian Andersen sex nightmare…in a good way. Link.

The Staircase by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade. Six hour documentary mini-series following the trial of a wealthy writer accused of murdering his wife. The story itself, coupled with unlimited access and astonishingly candid participation from all involved parties, combine to make this one of the more engrossing real crime docs I’ve ever seen. The hours will fly by. Link.

Girlfriends/Bonezone at Charlie’s Kitchen. Good local bands are hard to come by. These two more than fit the bill. Girlfriends play taut, melodic garage rock. Bonezone are an art punk three piece from Western Ma. I’m sure they’ll both be moving to Brooklyn any day now…

Salad Days by Minty Lewis. First three chapters of a new graphic novel from the comic world’s pre-eminent fruit humanizer. Can’t wait to read more. Link.

Morvern Callar by Lynne Ramsay. Flawlessly photographed, obliquely constructed film about tragedy and denial. Samantha Morton gives a brilliant performance. I also strongly recommend Ramsay’s first film, Ratcatcher. Link.

Islands at Harper’s Ferry. Criminally under-attended show by one of the better pop groups going. Could’ve maybe done without the capes, white jeans and rhinestones, but great music has a way of validating questionable fashion choices. Link.

4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days by Cristian Mungiu. Palme d’Or-winning Romanian film about an illegal abortion. Not for the squeamish, but the acting and film-making are outstanding. Link.

Young Lions by Blaise Larmee. I’ve been internet acquaintances with Blaise for a few years now and I’ve tried to keep tabs on his output, as it is frequently interesting (in spite of its scarcity). Young Lions is his first graphic novel (funded by a Xeric grant) and the artwork is unsurprisingly jaw-dropping. The storytelling style is impressionistic, disjointed and at times evasive, but it seems generally to be about listless, ineffectual young people who adopt conceptual art as a kind of religion. This serves to imbue their trivial wanderings and indiscretions with a mystical significance, all of which are overseen by an omniscient Yoko Ono. It’s a very interesting book. Highly recommended. Cache by Michael Haneke. I’ve been working my way through the Haneke oeuvre the past few weeks. They’re all incredible but this is the best of the lot, probably due to its accessibility. Link.

Record Hospital by WHRB. Excellent late night radio show on the Harvard University Station. Link.

The Room by Tommy Wiseau. I sort of stumbled into seeing this movie not realizing what an odd cult following it has. It’s a pretty singular viewing experience. Link.

Season 5 of Awesome Show by Tim & Eric. Particularly enjoyed the cameo by the dude who played Bunk on The Wire. Link.

Glance by Jessica Williams. Tabloid-sized collection of photos my friend Jessica sent me. It’s great and people should check out her stuff. Link.

The Pervert’s Guide To Cinema by Sophie Fiennes. A creatively-staged cinema studies course with the dynamic Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek. Jumping from classic scene to classic scene, he interprets the psychological and philosophical meanings behind each one, ultimately broadening his scope to include the complex relationship between film and reality. Link.

Nichols Candies. Totally awesome candy store in Gloucester. Seems to exclusively employ old ladies. The peanut brittle was first rate, as were the malted milk balls. Couldn't afford the chocolate Last Supper. Link.

Spit In The Face Of People Who Don’t Want To Be Cool by The Beets. Some echoe-y songs about the devil and making yourself throw up. Bonus points for what I assume is a reference to “Doug.” Sadly they don’t cover Killer Tofu. Link.

Old Joy by Kelly Reichardt. I rented this because I really liked Wendy and Lucy. It’s similar to that movie in that it’s minimally plotted, beautifully photographed and way more engrossing than the story has any right to be. Link.

S/T by Smith Westerns. Very catchy lo-fi glam. My only complaint is that sometimes they sound a little TOO much like T-Rex. Link.

The Cruise by Bennett Miller. Character study of an eccentric NYC tour guide named Speed Levitch. Inspiring dude, in his crazy way. Link.

Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. Re-read in memoriam. Anything from sixty years ago that’s still funny is super impressive.

Patton Oswalt at the Wilbur Theatre. The Wilbur is a historic theater in downtown Boston that used to primarily put on plays. I think one time I saw Marisa Tomei and Quentin Tarantino (back when he thought he could act) do a terrible version of Wait Until Dark there. Anyway...it got bought recently by a comedy club and it's a great venue for stand-up.

Deep Water by Louise Osmond/Jerry Rothwell. Documentary about a 1968 yacht race around the world that ends really badly. Amazing story. Link.

Corn Nuts by Planters. Can’t believe I didn’t know about corn nuts. If I go into a store now and they have Corn Nuts, I’m instantaneously friends with everyone working there. Link.

"Galveston" by Glen Campbell. Turns out that before country music shifted thematic focus towards running over Arabs with Ford F-150s, it was pretty great. Listen.

David Cross at the Wilbur Theatre. Amazing new material. They were filming this for a DVD of some kind, so look for that whenever it comes out. Link.

The King of Kong. Engrossing documentary about world-class Donkey Kong competition. It sounds like a socially retarded horror show (and it is), but by the end I actually cared. Link.

Rosshalde by Hermann Hesse. When the stars are properly aligned and my tea leaves deem it appropriate, I will read a book without pictures. It is usually a Hermann Hesse book, and it is never a disappointment. This particular one is about his crumbling family life. Link.

Primary Colours by Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Sophmore effort from Melbourne’s finest. They are also the recipient of this year’s “most difficult to remember band name” award, barely edging out Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci. Listen.

Fatal Faux-Pas by Sam Gaskin. Extremely funny and versatile collection of short pieces by Mr Gascan. He uses a lot of appropriated pop-culture icons, so here’s hoping Fonzie and Spiderman aren’t litigious. Link.

Unknown Pleasures (33 1/3 Series) by Chris Ott : Excessively gushy, but worth reading if you like Joy Division.

I’m Alan Partridge Series 1 : One of Steve Coogan’s BBC shows. This is the first one I’ve seen and it was pretty outstanding. I could do without the laugh track, though.

Up 3-D : Odd combination of grim realism and over-the-top silliness. Very strange.
Obsessed : The latest A&E rubbernecker. In the episode I watched, a woman compuisvely wears the tattered, bloody clothes her father died in. As if that weren’t enough, a gay man is made to rub menstrual blood on his face.

I Love Movies by Doug Benson : A podcast in which funny people discuss movies. It is recommended for fans of movies and funny people.

The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. I’m sure this guy is going to take a beating. I just want to be on record as having liked the first episode. It didn’t feel toothless in any way. Andy’s back. The running sequence was oddly touching. Ferrell was funny. So help me I even liked the Pearl Jam song. Watch.

COMEBACK CURIO

Eastbound & Down. This is a show starring the apparently well-liked actor Danny McBride as a burnt-out former pitcher who is forced to move back to his hometown and teach gym. Terrible premise. That sounds like the sort of movie someone would invent in thirty seconds to make fun of Billy Bob Thornton. HOWEVER…after all six episodes I am upgrading this show’s status from “pretty shaky” to “worth watching.” I will call it a comeback if I want to. Link.
